Your bike might be the most fun, but nothing will ever outlast the KLR! And I can go places your SV can only dream of! MY BIKE CAN BEAT UP YOUR BIKE!!!

/the words of a man who wouldn’t mind buying a brand new SV650

/Also a man who is probably going to buy a used SV soon as a more street focused bike

Definitely looking at one for my first shifty-bike. Despite being mid-displacement, people seem to still recommend them for novice riders (plus I’ve been on pedal bikes my whole life and riding a scooter for a while now).

I am not a fan of the new one. 2nd gen (03-17) is the best one.

Well I’d also probably buy an FZ-07 before a new SV and I love the look of the XSR700 and the Bonneville street twin if I’m willing to spend the big $ for a very capable standard bike.

Ignore Peter - get a KLR650 instead. Dirt 650 is best 650.

I know you’re joking, but story time.

I DD’d a 2003 SV650 all through college in Tucson. The city of Tucson floods pretty much every other day during monsoon season. I have fond memories of pushing that bike through flood waters trying to get home from work. One day I decided to take the back route to the top of Mt. Lemmon from Oracle, AZ (creepy town). I thought the road would be paved, but it ended up being a 4wd only road all the way to the 10ft summit. Took me around four hours. This was pre smart phone days so all I have left of that adventure are memories.

Damn, now I want an SV again.

In twenty years the SV650 is going to be the be the CB350. Time for me to find a few cherry ones to sit on.

you know as well as I do how great this thing is.

I need/want a new bike. but the SV will be retired to the back of the garage, taken apart, rebuild from the ground up, and Id send the motor and trans to be professional rebuilt.

(not that i can sell it with the milage on it now [150k miles] but eh)

Eh. Not bad, but I’ve literally.submerged my KLR up to the instrument cluster and it handled the water trap better than most of the quads and side by side. Which was a very harrowing moment for me cause when the front tire suddenly disappeared in front of me, I stood on the oegs and took a breath, just in case...

But I agree that as far as standard/naked bikes go, the SV is a tough cookie.

I thought the SV650 was nice but ended up on an FZ-09 because triple.

though LOL at Yamaha trying to market it as a “crossplane concept” engine to tie it to the YZF-R1. as if there’s any other way to configure a three-cylinder’s crankshaft.

If I go with a duallie, it’s gonna be a drz400

I ran into the SV325 issue once. Scared the shit out of me until I realized it was just water in the cylinder. I would just stick a glob of vaseline around the front plug if I knew it was going to rain.

Have you tried a WR250R? It’s the small dual sport I’d get. Much more advanced than the DRZ and pretty robust all around. But in the 650 really, there can only be the KLR due to fuel tank size and aftermarket support.

I know I’m going to end up repainting mind...you think I should stick with OEM color or do something else? (yes, Stickers would be going...)

You have a gixxer front end on yours, right? If it’s already customized I’d go custom paint. Nothing too flashy, but simple and clean.

Yea. Id basicly be tearing the whole thing down, getting rid of the ABS pump (i like it on a dd bike...if im tracking simple is the name of the game) and repaint.

Oh, it’s gotta be able to cruise at 70-75 for an hour and a half,or I’d have picked up a 250 dirt-ish-bike already. My scooter can already go nearly as fast (top and/or cruising speed)as a 250 single because of gearing and revs

Kinja'd!!!0

If you have to cruise that far, have you looked at the V-strom 650XT? WIth suspension upgrades, they’ll do the lesser trails just fine while also being able to beast the highway like champs. Honestly the DRZ400 will buzz your ears out on the highway. I do some highway trips on the KLR and I promise you, it isn’t the best in stock form. Some new sprockets and upgrades and it’ll be okay, but the V-strom is so much better and outside of the fact that the trails near me are nothing but sand and water traps, it wouldn’t be significantly far off in off road prowess.

Yeah, that’s why I’m leaning towards the SV altogether. The only trails I’d ride are at the other end of that 90 minute ride (or equidistant to the north), so if anything I’d get a dedicated trail bike and just dump it at a friends house (or split it with them like a timeshare). I know “looks” shouldn’t be a primary decisioning point on a bike, but I don’t like the way the V-strom looks.

Unless I get a DRZ400SM and put some STUNTIN’ gear and some TAPOUT t shirts.

Either way, it’s a few months off.
